Mykon’s Search for Britain’s Next Top Talent

Cambridgeshire-based Mykon has launched its student competition for the second year running following 2008’s overwhelming success. Mykon hope to discover more of the country’s most promising young designers, and raise the already high exceptional standards that were submitted last year.

The competition is open to university students from all over the country who are studying design-based courses, as an opportunity to enter the architectural and design industries. The top three entrants will be rewarded with the opportunity to complete work experience at Mykon and the overall winner will receive £1000 and their design will be manufactured and displayed in a top London location.

Mykon provide a range of interior design and architectural solutions predominantly using aluminium honeycomb technology and are looking for an innovative design using these products. The design must include 80% (+/- 10%) of either B Clear or Press load panels, a design brief, and of course individuality and imagination! With such a loose design brief, Mykon hope to encourage the best from young designers and allow them to be inventive.

Last year’s finalist, who was studying a HND in Furniture and Realisation at London Metropolitan created an executive desk incorporating interesting lines and colour. Due to her success in the competition Doro has since been employed as a Design Engineer for the company.

Doro says that it is factors such as ‘the friendly and welcoming team’ and the ‘given freedom, responsibility and independence that have offered her great learning opportunities’ which have encouraged Doro to progress her career with Mykon. Currently she is working on the Mykon stand for February’s Surface Design Show, stand number 18.

Mykon hopes that Britain’s young talent will step up to the challenge and make Student Competition 2009 bigger and better than before.
